A faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has elected Sadiq Gombe as its substantive national chairperson.
Gombe, who has been acting as the chairman since 2025, was elected on Saturday at the party’s national convention held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi.
The party also elected other members into the national working committee (NWC), including Ugochukwu Uba (deputy national chairman, south), Olu Agunloye (national secretary), Mariam Batubo (national treasurer), Joseph Abu (national organising secretary), Araba Aiyenigba (national publicity secretary), Aderemi Abimbola (national legal adviser), Bello Hussaini (national financial secretary), Sa’adatu Abdullahi (national woman leader), and Daniel Ibe (national youth leader).

Speaking after the swearing-in of the new NWC members, Gombe said the SDP will provide the “needed alternative platform” to “rescue” the country.
Usman Bugaje, chairman of the national convention committee, commended party members for remaining resolute despite the country’s economic hardship.
“Despite all these challenges, your coming in your numbers is a measure of your commitment and determination to change your fortunes for good. No sacrifice is too great in changing the fortunes of the nearly 300 million oppressed people,” he said.
“The attempt by the ruling party to block the political space and eliminate competition and opposition is one of the most despicable offences today.”
The SDP is embroiled in a leadership dispute, with Gombe and Shehu Gabam laying claim to the chairmanship position.
In October 2025, the Gombe faction expelled Gabam over alleged financial misconduct.
Last month, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) listed Gabam as SDP chairman on its website following a court of appeal judgment affirming him as the party’s chairman.
