The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced plans to shut down Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, starting from March 2026.
According to FAAN, the closure will last for about 22 months to allow for extensive rehabilitation and expansion works aimed at modernising the ageing terminal and boosting passenger handling capacity.
To minimise disruption to international travel during the period, FAAN disclosed that a temporary departure hall measuring 8,000 square metres has been constructed to accommodate outbound international passengers. The facility, which is nearing completion, will initially handle operations for five to six international airlines.

Passengers travelling internationally during the transition period have been advised to arrive earlier than usual to allow sufficient time for check-in and security processes, as airlines gradually relocate their operations to the temporary terminal.
FAAN further assured that international arrivals and cargo operations will continue to function from other sections of the airport, ensuring continuity of services throughout the renovation period.
The upgrade project will also feature the construction of a new skywalk connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, major road network improvements, and expanded apron space designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
