A 14-year-old student has been arrested in France after allegedly shooting and injuring a school headmaster and a teacher with a hunting rifle.

The incident occurred on Monday at Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, a town near Marseille in southern France, according to French authorities.

The headmaster and the teacher sustained injuries to their legs and were taken to hospital. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

A third person was also grazed by gunfire during the incident, police said.

According to reports, the teenager brought the weapon into the school concealed in a guitar case before opening fire inside the building.

The suspect reportedly fired several shots on two floors of the school, including into a classroom occupied by teachers and pupils.

A member of the school staff eventually disarmed the teenager before police arrived and took him into custody.

Authorities said the motive for the shooting had yet to be established. Investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the attack.

French officials also said there was no immediate evidence linking the incident to recent student protests over conditions in the country’s schools.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with those affected and praised the school’s staff for their response, which helped prevent further casualties.

The incident has renewed concerns about violence in French schools, where shootings by pupils remain relatively rare.
