1. The heart-testing question
“If Jesus asked you, ‘Why should I let you into heaven?’”
This question is meant to expose what you are trusting in for salvation.
2. Answers that reveal misplaced trust
If your answer sounds like:
• “I try my best to keep the Ten Commandments”
• “I don’t live in bitterness”
• “I’m a good person”
• “I try to live right”
Then the concern is not that these things are wrong, but that you are relying on them.
That kind of answer shows trust in personal effort or moral performance, not in Christ alone.
3. The real issue: What are you trusting in?
The key question is:
Are you trusting:
• What Jesus Christ did alone for you? OR
• What Jesus did plus your own goodness?
The Bible teaches that salvation is not Christ plus anything. It is Christ alone.
4. True confidence of salvation
True conversion means you can honestly say:
• “My hope of heaven is entirely in what Jesus did”
• “I am not trusting my obedience, repentance, or goodness”
• “If I go to heaven, it is because of Christ, not me”
This is faith that rests, not faith that tries to earn.
5. Philippians 3:3 — Where confidence belongs
“We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort.”
This means:
• Salvation depends on Christ’s work
• Human effort contributes nothing
• Any confidence in self cancels confidence in Christ
6. Philippians 3:8 — Everything else is worthless
“Everything else is worthless when compared to what Christ has done.”
Paul is saying:
• Good works
• Religious obedience
• Moral discipline
are all worthless as a way to be saved
They are not bad—but they cannot gain Christ or heaven.
7. The only way to gain Christ
“This is how to go to heaven and that’s the only way to gain Christ.”
That way is:
• Abandoning trust in self
• Fully relying on Christ’s finished work
• Counting personal righteousness as “garbage” for salvation
8. Philippians 3:9 — How righteousness works
“I no longer count on my own righteousness… I become righteous through faith in Christ.”
Key truth:
• Obeying the law does not make you right with God
• Faith in Christ does
• God declares sinners righteous based on faith, not performance
9. Romans 5:1 — The result of faith
“Since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ has done.”
Because salvation is based on Christ:
• There is peace, not fear
• No uncertainty
• No striving to earn acceptance
10. Final conclusion
Those who still trust in their own righteousness—even a little—have not fully understood the gospel.
True conversion means:
• No trust in self
• Full trust in Christ
• Peace with God because of what Jesus has done
In one sentence: We go to heaven not because of what we do for Christ, but because of what Christ has already done for us.
