Turning away after knowing the truth
Hebrews 6:4–6 — New Living Translation (NLT)
4. For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened—those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit,
5. who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come—
6. and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame.
It is impossible for those who were once enlightened… if they fall away, to renew them again unto repentance.
The rejection mentioned in Hebrews 6:4–6 can be a turning back to the Law, or to any system that tries to earn righteousness apart from Christ.
Such rejection says, in effect, “Christ’s sacrifice is not enough.”
And since there is no other sacrifice for sin, the person finds no way back until they truly repent and believe again in Christ’s finished work.
• This is the tragedy of apostasy — rejecting Christ after truly knowing Him.
• Such people return to the old system of works, denying Christ’s sufficiency.
• By doing so, they “crucify the Son of God afresh” — rejecting the only way to There is no other path to God
Christ’s death alone satisfies the justice of God.
There is no more consciousness of sin. Meaning no longer expecting the terror of God’s judgment.
Hebrews 10:26–27 (NLT):
26. Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.
27. There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.
To sin wilfully is not merely to break a moral rule, but to disregard, despise, or abandon the sacrifice of Christ by going back to the law. When a person knowingly rejects that sacrifice, there remains no other offering. The only way that you reject that sacrifice is by going back to the law as a means to earn salvation.
Christ’s sacrifice is final, perfect, and complete.
To try to add human effort or law-keeping to it is to say His work wasn’t enough.
The sufficiency and the efficacy of the work of Christ
Hebrews 10:29 — King James Version (KJV)
“Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden underfoot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?”

“Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant—which made us holy—as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us.”
• To treat Christ’s blood as “common” is to obscure the efficacy of the blood of Christ that makes you holy once for all time.

“For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.”
Galatians 2:18 (NLT)
“Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down.”
Galatians 2:21 (NLT)
“I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.”
Central Truth
God’s grace through Christ ended the old covenant system of righteousness by works. If we try to rebuild that system or depend on the Law, we reject the purpose of the cross and make Christ’s sacrifice of no effect.
Falling from Grace (Galatians 5:4)
“For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.”

To depend on human effort cuts you off from the benefits of Christ’s finished work.
