On Monday, the Nigerian Presidency introduced the new Airbus A330 purchased for President Bola Tinubu, replacing the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) acquired during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who shared images of the new jet via his verified X handle.
Onanuga noted that while the cost of the new jet was not disclosed, its acquisition was a strategic move to cut down on the significant maintenance and fuel expenses associated with the old aircraft, which ran into millions of dollars annually.

He explained, “The new plane bought far below the market price saves Nigeria huge maintenance and fuel costs, running into millions of dollars yearly.”
The decision to replace the aging Boeing B737-700(BBJ) came after an investigative hearing by Nigeria’s parliament, which raised concerns about the plane’s safety and cost efficiency, particularly following a malfunction during a trip to Saudi Arabia.
The Nigerian Senate’s security and intelligence committee had recommended the replacement to mitigate downtime and operational expenses.
The new Airbus A330 boasts modern avionics, a customized interior, and advanced communication systems.
President Tinubu departed Abuja for Paris, France, using the new jet, which took off from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 04:08 pm.
This trip marks Tinubu’s fourth visit to France, as announced by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale.
