In a dramatic political twist, leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State have pledged their support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, vowing to protect his interest in the South-West.
The surprising endorsement was made on Monday during the official campaign launch of Hon. Abolarinwa Oluwole, the PDP’s candidate for the upcoming August 16 by-election for the Sagamu-Remo/Iperu Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
The event drew prominent party stakeholders from across the South-West, including the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Dr. Oladipupo Adebutu.
Speaking at the rally, Ogun PDP Chairman, Hon. Nureni Abayomi Tella, emphasised the importance of regional loyalty, drawing a comparison with the North’s consistent backing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The North stood firmly with Buhari until the end. President Tinubu is a son of the South-West and a father to all, regardless of political affiliation. We will not abandon our own,” Tella declared.
He further added that the PDP in Ogun would defend Tinubu’s interest, insisting that political lines should not override regional allegiance.
Adebutu echoed this sentiment, revealing that his recent interaction with President Tinubu left him convinced of the president’s sincerity and concern for Nigerians.
However, he did not mince words in condemning the current Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, accusing him of poor governance.

“The APC administration under Dapo Abiodun has failed woefully. He has stifled local government autonomy and trampled on the rights of pensioners. Even in his own ward, he lost the last election. Ogun deserves better,” Adebutu said.
He urged voters to use the August 16 by-election to send a strong message, describing it as a referendum on Abiodun’s leadership.
Also, Oluwole took direct aim at the APC-led state government, criticising its disregard for local councils and widespread voter disenfranchisement. He stressed the importance of peaceful participation and cautioned against electoral malpractice.
“We won’t tolerate ballot snatching like what happened in 2023. The governor must warn his loyalists. A sitting governor should not be associated with ballot theft. If the people reject you, accept it and move on,” Oluwole stated.
The PDP also unveiled a 55-member campaign committee chaired by Hon. Dare Bello to steer Oluwole’s campaign machinery ahead of the by-election.
