Violence continues to grip Nepal amid mass “Gen Z” protests triggered by a controversial social media ban.
Significant new developments have emerged, including the tragic death of the wife of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, a brutal assault on the finance minister, and escalating government collapse.
At the height of the unrest, protesters set Jhala Nath Khanal’s residence ablaze. His wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, became trapped inside the burning home and was fatally injured.
“She was burned alive after protesters set her residence on fire,” reported Reuters and the Economic Times.
Meanwhile, a harrowing video circulating online shows Nepal’s Finance Minister being chased by a mob and driven into a river in Kathmandu. The scene underscores the intensity of public anger directed at government officials.
The protests initially erupted over a sudden ban on major platforms like Facebook, X, and YouTube. The move sparked nationwide outrage, particularly among the youth, who also vented mounting frustration over systemic corruption and economic stagnation.
By yesterday, clashes had intensified. Police responded with live ammunition, water cannons, and tear gas to disperse protesters. Stones were thrown, barricades breached, and several government buildings torched, including the parliament, Supreme Court, and Prime Minister’s residence.
At least 19 people were killed and hundreds wounded in these confrontations.
Under mounting pressure, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned, signaling a turning point in the crisis.
Protests continue, though the government has lifted the social media ban and promised a 15-day investigation.
