Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the late Olabisi Onabanjo, the former governor of Ogun state, has died at the age of 100.
Her death was confirmed on Tuesday by one of her children, Olubukunola Onabanjo, chairperson of the Ogun state local government service commission, in a statement issued on behalf of the family.
Lucia died on Monday at her residence in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state, at 100 years.
“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother,” the statement reads.
“Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 12.
“We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”
Lucia attended the Teachers’ Training College, Yaba, Lagos, and worked in the teaching profession for over two decades.
Her husband served as the first civilian governor of Ogun state from 1979 to 1983 during Nigeria’s second republic. He died in April 1990 aged 63.
