Fresh security intelligence has uncovered a planned wave of attacks targeting key facilities in Nigeria’s capital, with jihadist groups focusing on aviation and correctional infrastructure around Abuja.s
An internal memo by the Nigeria Customs Service, dated April 13 and obtained by AFP, warned of a “credible report” that Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province are planning a “series of coordinated attacks” within the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.
The memo called for an “enhanced level of security within the Federal Capital Territory and its environs” as authorities respond to the growing threat.
Potential targets listed include the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Kuje Prison, and the Wawa military prison in neighbouring Niger State.

According to the document, “ISWAP operatives have already infiltrated the (Federal Capital Territory) to facilitate the attacks.”
Kuje prison remains a major concern after a 2022 assault in which ISWAP fighters freed hundreds of inmates, including suspected militants.
Earlier this month, the Kuje Area Council imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in some communities following “credible intelligence regarding a potential kinetic assault” on the facility.
The memo further noted that the planned attack on Wawa prison is “reportedly being orchestrated” by Boko Haram elements in Niger State “in collaboration with elements of” Ansaru and JNIM operating across the Sahel.
It also warned that the airport plot “reveals a concerning correlation” with recent attacks on aviation facilities in Niger Republic, including an incident in Niamey claimed by an Islamic State affiliate.
Despite these warnings, government officials maintain that Abuja is safe and not under any immediate threat, describing recent foreign advisories as precautionary.
