US President Donald Trump has warned Republicans that failure to win the 2026 midterm elections could lead to his impeachment.
Trump gave the warning on Tuesday while addressing lawmakers at a House Republican retreat held at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
“You got to win the midterms because if we don’t win the midterms, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached,” the president told party members.
Trump was impeached twice during his first term in office but was acquitted by the Senate on both occasions. The first impeachment in 2019 centred on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, while the second followed the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, when he was accused of inciting an insurrection.
“I got impeached twice on nothing,” Trump said, speaking on the fifth anniversary of the Capitol attack.

With the midterm elections approaching, Trump acknowledged that the ruling party often faces challenges but insisted Republican policies were superior to those of the Democrats.
“They say when you win the presidency, you lose the midterms. But we have the right policy. They don’t,” he said, accusing Democrats of sticking together despite what he described as poor leadership and policies.
Trump also touched on the Republicans’ narrow majority in the House of Representatives, which has reportedly shrunk following the death of California lawmaker Doug LaMalfa and the early retirement of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Despite the slim numbers, Trump threw his support behind House Speaker Mike Johnson. “A lot of times they say, ‘I wish Mike were tougher.’ He’s tough as anybody in the room,” Trump said, adding that it was difficult to govern with such a narrow majority.
