The Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi and the Oluwo of Iwo

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi says that the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, whom he once visited in his palace, chased him out of the place like he would a child.

Oba Ogunwusi, who was speaking in a trending video on Sunday, however, said he had a duty to contain the excesses of the Iwo monarch.

“When I visited Oluwo, he chased me out like a child. Since that incident, I have always maintained myself going close to him. Now that you people are imploring that I visit him again, what if he does what he likes to me?

“But I have to contain his excesses as an elder, although I am a young person sitting on the throne of the elders. Oluwo, I greet you,” he said.

Although the Ooni of Ife did not give any details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, it is well known that Oba Akanbi is averse to many Yoruba traditions as he claims that his domain is for Islam. This claim has often placed him at loggerheads with other Yoruba traditional leaders and culture defenders.

Oba Akanbi had also once alleged in 2018 that an Ooni’s bodyguard, acting on the order Ile-Ife monarch, had pushed him at an event in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital.  But the allegation was denied by Oba Ogunwusi.
