The people of Aninri Local Government Area in Enugu State are in high spirits following the return of Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu.
Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return marks the end of a long legal battle in the United Kingdom, where she was convicted for her involvement in an organ trafficking scandal.
Beatrice Ekweremadu had been sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison after being found guilty, alongside her husband and Dr. Obinna Obeta, for their role in a scheme to arrange for a young man, David Nwamini, to be brought to the UK to donate his kidney for their daughter, Sonia, who had been suffering from kidney failure.
The conviction was handed down at London’s Central Criminal Court on May 5, 2023, under the Modern Slavery Act.
While her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu received a sentence of 9 years and 8 months, and Dr. Obeta was sentenced to 10 years, Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return to Nigeria has been met with jubilation in her hometown of Mpu, Aninri Local Government Area. The news of her arrival in Abuja on Tuesday evening sparked a wave of excitement as family, friends, and well-wishers gathered to welcome her home.
