Former President Goodluck Jonathan has finally arrived Nigeria from troubled Guinea Bissau as tension began to mount following the coup d’état in the country on Wednesday.
There were serious concerns that Jonathan had been trapped in the country and had not been able to leave as a result of the sudden change of government by the military.
After leaving Guinea Bissau, Jonathan flew to Abidjan, the Abidjan, the economic capital and largest city of Côte d’Ivoire from where he connected a flight back to Nigeria.
A family source confirmed that Jonathan arrived Abidjan in the afternoon of Thursday on his way to Nigeria.
“We have just landed in Abidjan and will soon leave for Abuja, soon,” an aide travelling with Jonathan, said to Vanguard at about 4pm on Thursday.
Before then, a member of Jonathan’s family had confirmed that he was safe in the African country, which was taken over by military officers on Wednesday.

A member of Jonathan’s family, Robert Azibaola, confirmed to Vanguard on Thursday that there was no threat to Jonathan’s life even though he is still trapped in the troubled country.
Azibaola, who is a cousin to Jonathan, said that he had been speaking severally with the former president since the new of the coup in Guinea Bissau broke out yesterday.
The Bayelsa-born lawyer said, “Jonathan has not been able to leave Guinea Bissau, but he is safe. I have spoken with him severally today.
“There is no threat to his life. We are in constant touch with him,” Azibaola said.
