Waheed Ayilara, Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom state, has died in Lagos just hours after attending a retirement and birthday ceremony.

Ayilara reportedly died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Thursday from prostate cancer complications.

The late PoliceCommissioner, who also attended the wedding of IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s son at the weekend, died earlier on Monday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where doctors are on strike.

A source said, “In fact, he walked into the hospital today for a surgery, but unfortunately, we lost him.”

He earned a law degree (LL.B) from the University of Ibadan and Masters of Law (LLM) from the University of Lagos.

He was appointed into the police force as a cadet assistant superintendent of police on May 18, 1992 and has served in various capacities.

A devout Muslim, Ayilara will be laid to rest today in accordance with Islamic rites.
