The Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media to Bayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, Mr Bolaji Tunji, has denied reports that his principal has resigned from his position.
On Tuesday, a letter attributed to Adelabu announced his resignation as the Minister of Power, citing intention to contest the 2027 Oyo governorship election.
The letter was addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Tunji said on Tuesday evening that the minister has not resigned and that the viral letter did not come from the minister’s office.
“He has not resigned. That letter of resignation did not come from his office,” he said.
Asked if Adelabu will resign to join the 2027 Oyo governorship race, the spokesperson responded that “when the time comes, everything will be revealed”.
In June 2025, Adelabu met with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo state to declare his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election.
On March 17, President Bola Tinubu directed his political appointees seeking elective positions in 2027 to resign on or before March 31.
Adelabu left the position of deputy governor (operations) at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2018 to pursue a governorship bid in 2019.
He became the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 election but lost the election to Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In 2022, after losing the APC primary to Teslim Folarin, a former senator, Adelabu defected to the Accord Party (AP) and contested the governorship election on the party’s platform following the withdrawal of Ayodele Oyajide from the race.
Again, he lost the 2023 governorship election to Makinde. Adelabu returned to the APC in 2023 and was appointed as the minister of power by Tinubu.
