Gunmen have abducted an unspecified number of students, at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, Askira/Uba LGA of Borno state.
The assailants attacked the school on Monday morning while students were taking the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) organised by the National Examinations Council (NECO).
One of the teachers was reportedly killed during the incident, with another sustaining injuries.
Nahum Daso, police spokesperson in Borno, confirmed the incident, adding that some students are still missing.
“Today at about 9am, suspected members of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists invaded the Lassa community on motorcycles,” the Borno police spokesperson said.
“Unspecified number of students are currently missing but police, military, hunters, and vigilantes are combing the area.”
The incident adds to the growing list of abduction of schoolchildren on school premises by terrorists.
Between May 13 and 14, militants attacked a primary school in Chibok, Borno, and abducted 42 children.
On May 15, about 39 students and seven teachers were abducted when gunmen invaded three schools in the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis of Oriire in Ogbomoso, Oyo state.
The incident sparked widespread outrage, culminating in nationwide protests for two days by members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other stakeholders.
