President Bola Tinubu on Saturday inaugurated the Gateway International Airport in Iperu, Ogun state, along with the new Gateway airline.
Tinubu commended Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, for his “visionary leadership and effective use of resources”.
“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity we have today to celebrate the remarkable vision of a governor and his predecessors. Today, we commissioned the economic nerve centre of our corridor,” the president said.
“In less than seven years, you, Dapo Abiodun, have demonstrated commitment, vision, and patriotism to grow Nigeria. We celebrate you for your contribution to national development. I have no regret for whatever we have done with you.”
The president said the new airport aligns with broader investments in energy and infrastructure, noting that such projects are key to national growth.
He added that the federal government remains committed to policies that promote economic expansion and improve citizens’ welfare.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was present at the event, described the airport as a landmark project, noting that it would significantly reduce travel time for residents.
“I’ve landed here from Abuja, and it took me 45 minutes from here to my home, which is at least 25 minutes shorter than if I had landed in Lagos,” he said.
“I want to thank our governor for making us proud of what we are commissioning today. I am happy to be a witness to this historic occasion.”
In his remarks, Abiodun said the airport and other projects were part of efforts to close infrastructure gaps and position Ogun as a competitive investment destination.
He added that the state government has constructed or rehabilitated over 1,600 kilometres of roads, built thousands of housing units, and invested in healthcare, agriculture, and energy.
According to the governor, the new airport and airline will enhance trade, mobility, and regional development.
The event was attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio; governors of Zamfara, Bayelsa, Taraba, Ekiti, Ondo, Niger, and Lagos states; as well as Bayo Lawal, deputy governor of Oyo; and Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor of Lagos.
Also present were former governors of Ogun state, Segun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun.
Others included Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation, Aliko Dangote, president of the Dangote Group, and Femi Otedola, billionaire businessman.
