Seven persons have been injured following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident, which occurred at 11am on Friday, April 3 while workers were on site, threw the area into panic as residents and passersby rushed to the scene to assist in rescue efforts before the arrival of emergency responders.
A statement by the FCT Emergency Management Department, confirmed that rescue operations are still underway at the site of the collapsed building, noting that one person who was initially trapped beneath the debris has been successfully pulled out alive.
The agency disclosed that emergency responders remain on ground, working tirelessly to search for and assist any other possible victims who may still be buried under the rubble.
The Department added that the structure, a building under construction at the time of the incident, gave way unexpectedly, prompting swift intervention from rescue teams and other relevant authorities.
According to the FEMD Search and Rescue Team, 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it collapsed, injuring five workers and trapping a lone male who was at the ground level of the building.

“The injured workers and the rescued trapped male have been taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi and are said to be responding to treatment.
“The FCT Emergency Management Department, National Emergency Management Agency, Department of Development Control, Engineering Department FCDA, Civil Defence Federal Fire Service and the FCT Police Command are at the incident scene,” the statement added.
It assured that efforts are being intensified to ensure that all those affected are accounted for, while also reiterating the need for strict adherence to building safety standards to prevent such occurrences. The incident highlights growing concerns over the enforcement of building regulations and safety standards across the country, particularly as rapid urban development continues to stretch oversight mechanisms.
