The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caretaker committee on Wednesday said the national convention of the party slated for Abuja later this month would be held as scheduled.

The faction of the opposition party backed by the FCT Minister, Barr Nyesom Wike, disclosed that the party had concluded all the state congresses preparatory to the conduct of the convention where a new national leadership is expected to emerge.

Speaking at a pre-convention press briefing, the National Publicity Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, also said the faction had not foreclosed reconciliation with the Taminu Turaki-led group in the party.

He, however, said the conduct of state congresses was in line with the judgment of Justice James Omotosho delivered at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Mohammed explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had already been notified about the party’s convention, adding that this informed the supervision and monitoring of the ward, local government, and state congresses across the country.

According to the NPS, “But before we can proceed with any convention, we have to conclude all congresses. That is how it has been done. We just finished with that of Plateau yesterday, and then the Zonal congresses for the South East and North West will be on Saturday.

“The schedule of activities starts from tomorrow, Thursday, March 2026, at which we expect to publish the names of all the convention committees.

“As part of the line-up of activities in the build-up to the National Convention, the NPS said: “We have the National Convention Planning and Organising Committee. The committee has the following subcommittees: Venue, Security, Entertainment, Welfare, Accreditation, Media and Publicity, Protocol, Accommodation and Transport, Electoral Committee, Zoning, Screening, Medical, the National Convention Monitoring Subcommittee, which is pursuant to Article 1.3(c)(i) of the electoral guidelines, and then we have Secretariat Subcommittee.

“We expect to publish the names and membership of these committees and subcommittees tomorrow.

“The Zoning Committee will meet to zone various positions across all the geopolitical zones. And then, Monday, 23rd March, there will be an emergency NEC meeting.

“Sales of forms will commence immediately after the NEC meeting, and it is expected to last till March 25, 2026.”

He however stated that efforts to resolve the crisis in the party were still ongoing, adding that the faction had not ruled out the possibility of reconciling with the other faction.

Mohammed added, “Reconciliation is an ongoing thing, and it cannot in any way prevent the caretaker committee from carrying out the convention.

“If you recall, we had initially informed the representative of the Turaki group who attended our last NEC meeting that whatever their written proposals may be, two things remain sacrosanct: the existence of this caretaker committee and the conduct of this National Convention. “So irrespective of whatever reconciliation that is likely to happen, it will not affect the conduct and processes leading to this convention; we are open, we are still open for reconciliation.”
