Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and the need to protect the broader interests of the people of Kano State.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf conveyed his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, with the resignation taking effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.
In the letter, the Governor expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity and support accorded to him since joining the NNPP in 2022.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the Governor stated, noting that he appreciated the goodwill and cooperation he enjoyed during his time in the party.
Governor Yusuf attributed his decision to persistent internal disputes and leadership crises within the party, many of which, he noted, are currently the subject of ongoing legal battles across the country.
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination,” he said.

He added that the unresolved disputes had weakened internal cohesion and widened divisions within the party at both state and national levels, creating uncertainty and disenfranchisement among members.
The Governor stressed that his decision followed careful reflection and was guided strictly by public interest considerations.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he said, adding that the move was taken in good faith and without bitterness.
“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State,” the Governor assured.
The statement further revealed that Governor Yusuf’s resignation was accompanied by the exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
Meanwhile, the NNPP acknowledged receipt of the Governor’s resignation letter.
The Secretary of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, commended Governor Yusuf for what he described as his laudable achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.
“I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party. Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option but to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors of the NNPP,” Zubairu said.
Governor Yusuf’s resignation marks a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape and is expected to further reshape the state’s ongoing political realignment.
