Authorities in Iran have executed a man in the city of Semnan after he was found guilty of deliberately killing his wife by suffocation.
According to Mizan, the judiciary’s official news outlet, the crime took place in 2020. The death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court, clearing the way for the execution, which was carried out this week.
Investigators said the man had attempted to disguise the killing as a natural death, but forensic tests and a reconstruction of events exposed the deception.

Public executions, typically carried out by hanging, are uncommon in Iran, though the country continues to draw widespread condemnation for its heavy reliance on capital punishment. Human rights organisations accuse Tehran of using executions as a tool to silence dissent and instill fear.
Amnesty International estimated in September that more than 1,000 people had been executed in Iran this year, the highest figure recorded in over a decade and a half.
