The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will close on Tuesday to observe the national holiday declared by the Nigerian government.
The holiday is declared in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at age 82.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria announced the closure via its official X account on Monday, July 14, 2025.
“All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled,” the statement noted, ensuring affected applicants will receive new appointment dates.
The U.S. Mission confirmed that normal operations would resume after the holiday.

The Nigerian government declared July 15 a public holiday to commemorate Buhari, who served as president from 2015 to 2023 and previously as military head of state from 1983 to 1985.
He was widely recognized for his anti-corruption efforts and contributions to Nigeria’s security policies.
The closure reflects the U.S. Mission’s respect for Nigeria’s period of national mourning, aligning with the seven-day mourning period announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during which flags will fly at half-mast across the country.
