Twenty persons have been killed by suspected herdsmen in fresh attacks in two Plateau communities of Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
15 villagers, mostly women, were on Thursday night attacked and killed at Tilengpat, Pushit, communities of Mangu Local Government Area. Also on the same Thursday night, five persons including a student of Plateau State University were killed in Butura Communities of Bokkos Local Government.
The Chairman of Mangu Local Government Area, Hon. Markus Artu, confirmed the killings from the fresh attacks.
Following the killing of a 200-level student of the institution, the management of the Plateau State University, Bokkos, suspended examinations and shut down the institution. The university’s Registrar, Yakubu Ayuba, announced the shutdown of the institution in a statement on Friday.
He said: “Following the sad incident that occurred in Plateau State University, Bokkos and the surrounding community on Friday, April 19, and because of the psychological effects of the unfortunate incidents on the students and staff of the university, the management has shut down the university for ten days with effect from today, 19th April, 2024.
Also, at least 23 people have been reportedly killed by bandits, who attacked the Anguwar Danko community near Dogon Dawa district in the Eastern part of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Birnin Gwari shares a border with Katsina State.
A community leader, Zubairu Abdulrahuf, told reporters that bandits in large numbers invaded the community on Wednesday night. During the invasion, Abdulrahuf said bandits started shooting sporadically to scare residents, and in the process, more than 20 persons were shot dead.
He disclosed that while five people sustained varying degrees of injuries from gunshots, some other residents are still missing after the attack.
The university’s Registrar, Yakubu Ayuba said: “This decision is to allow the security situation to improve and to lessen the human risk to the university community. “Accordingly, the ongoing first semester examinations are hereby suspended and are to resume on Thursday, May 2.”
The Registrar added that the “management has made available buses to convey students who may be stranded from the university to Barkin Ladi.
“This is coming despite the relentless effort by the Plateau State government, security agencies, the Management of the university and other stakeholders at improving the security situation on our campus and the surrounding communities. “Unfortunately, the enemies of the university and the state brought this dastardly attack leading to the loss of our dear student.
