Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over multiple fraudulent allegations.
The Assembly has immediately sworn in its first female Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa was removed by the lawmakers during a plenary on Monday.
Details surrounding the speaker’s removal are still sketchy as of press time. But the impeachment might be connected to multiple statutory and financial infractions the former speaker was accused of.
Obasa was reported to have oversaw the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for back up vehicles for lawmakers, as well as other controversial activities.
Obasa was said to be in Atlanta, USA, when he was impeached.
Obasa was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, resuming office alongside former one-term governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
Repeated charges of fraud and political thuggery have marked his speakership.

He was invited for questioning by the EFCC after the anti-graft office became overwhelmed by media reports of his alleged mismanagement. He denied all allegations, and no charges were filed after he met with detectives.
Meranda took her oath of office after the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on during plenary session.
She represents the Apapa 1 state constituency in the assembly.
Taking her oath of office, Meranda said, “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, was yet to respond to inquiries regarding the development as of the time of filing this report.
