The high turnout on the last Friday of Ramadan came despite tight Israeli restrictions on access to the Jerusalem holy site, reports the Palestinian Wafa news agency.

Israeli forces set up checkpoints all throughout the Old City, stopping Palestinians en route to the mosque to check their IDs, according to Wafa. The forces prevented hundreds from reaching the mosque and arrested at least 11 people, Wafa added.

Earlier, Israeli forces fired tear gas at crowds of Palestinian worshippers outside the mosque after they chanted in protest against Israel’s attacks in Gaza.
